Wyoming Hereford Ranch Habitat Enhancement Project

Wyoming Hereford Ranch is a designated “Important Bird Area” (IBA) for Laramie County.  Each year, visitors flock from near and far to see warblers and other spring migrants at this beautiful historic ranch, located only a few miles east of the City of Cheyenne.

In late November of 2022, a regular volunteer and avid birder, Vicki Herren, talked to the Board about noxious weeds (including Canada Thistle, Leafy Spurge, and Cheatgrass) which were multiplying along Crow Creek on the ranch.  She suggested a project which would be a collaborative effort between the landowners, CHPAS, and the Laramie County Conservation District.  The goal of this project would be to control the growth of the invasive species both through hand-pulling and spraying herbicides.  Native plants would also be added at key locations along the trail.  With the blessing of the Board of Directors and WHR landowners, CHPAS moved forward with the enhancement project.

To date, volunteers have spend hundreds of hours in weed abatement, and native plant restoration/maintenance; both of which are on-going. This project reflects the importance of WHR to our Chapter and to our entire region.
