Cheyenne offers several excellent locations for birding. The best birding locations in the area have been designated Important Bird Areas (IBAs) by the Audubon Society. The Wyoming Hereford Ranch, located southeast of Cheyenne off the Campstool Exit on I-80, is an excellent migrant trap in the spring and over 25 species of warbler have been recorded here.
The Hereford Ranch is private property so please, whether on foot or in a vehicle, stay on roads and away from residences and do not cross fences. No dogs are allowed. We ask that you respect this wonderful property which the owners have graciously opened for the enjoyment of all birders.
Please note that Reservoir 2 is on private land and is NOT accessible without permission from the property owners. Reservoir 1 (off of Burlington Trail Road) is accessible and often has very interesting waterfowl and shore bird populations.
Lions Park in west Cheyenne is another excellent birding location and is also an IBA. Of particular interest are populations of migrating birds in spring and fall. Also located on the property is a rookery of Black-crowned Night Herons. During the spring nesting season, birds can be seen in the pine trees next to the Botanic Gardens. Lions Park is very accessible to anyone who enjoys birds. Many paths are paved, allowing those individuals with mobility impairment access to most areas of the park.
Below is the updated Checklist for Laramie County, Wyoming. Species observed at Wyoming Hereford Ranch are in bold. Special thanks to Mark Gorges for updating this important document.
